Fly Fishing Outings - Travelling Light

After a recent hand injury that required an operation, a long-planned six-day fishing trip to Ladybower suddenly presented a few challenges. Unable to drive, I had to rely on the generosity of family and friends to get me and my tackle to the fishery. My usual large roller box simply wasn't practical, so an old tackle bag was brought back into service. I downsized my fly selection into Snowbee Ultra Slim fly boxes, chose only the tackle I genuinely expected to use and left the rest at home.

A Fishing Wader Review for UK Bank Anglers

Waders should be roomy enough to let you crouch, step up a steep bank and wear suitable layers, without leaving excess material hanging around the legs. Too-tight waders restrict movement and put strain on seams. Oversized waders can snag on vegetation, catch water and feel cumbersome when you need steady footing.

A fly fishing vest keeps small, regularly used items on your body and close to hand. Its front pockets are designed for fly boxes, floatant, tippet, indicators, forceps and a small camera or phone. You can change a fly, add a split shot or replace a leader without taking your gear off or turning away from the water. A backpack carries more equipment and spreads the load across both shoulders. It is better for spare layers, food, a flask, a larger fly box selection, landing-net accessories and t

Looking after your fly line

Mud, algae, sunscreen, insect repellent, surface scum and fine grit all collect on a fly line. On stillwaters, you may notice the build-up after a few sessions. On rivers, especially when wading through silted margins or fishing below trees, it can happen sooner. Clean it before it becomes a problem and the line will stay smoother through the rod rings, easier to mend and more pleasant to handle.

Choosing the right fly fishing starter kit

Most experts recommend a versatile 9ft 5-weight setup because it suits a wide range of rivers, lakes, and trout fishing situations.

The end of April 2026 and the first outing of the year. Venue: Glencorse

It was great to get on to the water again after what seemed a long winter. Fly tying keeps the angler going over the winter season but it is no substitute for a day out in the boat, fishing.
